dish and discussion of the latest news and events from the U.S. political scene
If you live in Florida, and believe in domestic partner rights for straight and same sex couples, participate in the tele-town hall on Tuesday, October 14 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM (ET) to help defeat Florida’s Amendment 2.
You’ll need to register to join the call. Here is an email I got from the ACLU with the details.
Dear _____,
We are excited to bring ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero and ACLU of Florida Executive Director Howard Simon to your living room this coming Tuesday, October 14 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM (ET). Thanks to the modern marvels of technology you can attend our first-ever “Tele-Town Hall Meeting” in the comfort of your own home.
The ACLU-sponsored town hall will cover proposed Amendment 2, the so-called “Marriage Amendment,” its potential ramifications for Floridians and the national landscape with respect to other states that have passed similar laws and amendments.
This is not a traditional teleconference where you dial in; rather we will be calling you. If we have your telephone number on file, expect a phone call between 6:30PM and 6:45PM (ET). If you think we may not have your number, click here to provide it to us, and we will call you on Tuesday for the town hall.
The phone calls initiating the Town Hall will be made between 6:30PM and 6:45PM (ET). If you would like to participate you will be asked to press a number on your phone to be immediately connected to the audio Town Hall. Again, if we do not have your phone number, please register for this town hall event.
The call will be hosted by Derek Newton, Executive Director of Florida Red and Blue and will feature Anthony Romero and Howard Simon. We also have a very special guest speaker you won’t want to miss – so be sure to join us Tuesday to hear about this important issue.
The ramifications of proposed Amendment 2 are very real for all Floridians. Given the state of the economy, this is no time to be eliminating health care and other benefits for Floridians – which is exactly how this amendment will harm unmarried couples if it is passed.
This is your opportunity to hear from ACLU leadership about proposed Amendment 2 and to become more informed and involved on the efforts against the amendment. Register now for this one-time event!
The phone call will be free of charge to you, so please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to hear the latest news on Amendment 2 from national and state leaders.
Sincerely,
Tom Maher

This is so hard, gp. I realize that we need to get involved and stand up for ourselves, but sometimes, I don’t know if I have the guts to do it.

There are things worth fight for, Drew. Free and fair elections, stopping Democrats from behaving like Republican wing-nuts, universal health care, and equal rights. I fought this same type of discriminatory amend. in Virginia a few years ago. We came closer to defeating it than I thought we would. Fight like hell, young man! Every voice DOES make a difference.
